ROCKY MOUNT, N.C. -- The USA South's East Division leader N.C. Wesleyan maintained their status with a pair of wins over Meredith College Saturday afternoon. Catcher Bryce Smith led the Angels with a pair of hits and two-RBIs.
The Bishops took a quick lead with an RBI-single and a three-RBI home run in the bottom of the first inning. Meredith moved a pair of runners into scoring position in the second but left both on base. In the third Madison Hamilton advanced to first on an error and stole second. Charley Cox moved her teammate to third with a fly ball to left, and Smith homered to clear the bases.
Wesleyan continued to score, while the Avenging Angels left three more runners on base.
The Bishops recorded 11 hits on Sarah Gundlach with five walks. Gundlach struck out two, earning five runs in the loss. Susanne Taylor stepped into the circle midway through the fifth to finish out the game, and Beth Braswell earned the win for the Bishops, allowing four hits with no earned runs, striking out four Angels and walking two.
Meredith continued to struggle to stop N.C. Wesleyan in game two, as the Bishops scored three runs in each of the first three innings to take an early lead.
Smith singled in the first for Meredith, but a third out moved the Angels back to the field. In the second Chloe Johnson and Anna Goldman advanced on a pair of two-out singles, but Johnson was caught trying to advance to third.
Kelsey Mabe led off in the third with a single to short and stole second. Hamilton walked, and Cox sacrificed to push Hamilton to second. Taylor drove Mabe home with hit to right before the Bishops ran down Hamilton for a third out.
Wesleyan's defense held the Avenging Angels in the next two frames for an early eight-run victory.
Meredith caps off a weekend doubleheader Sunday at Greensboro. First pitch is slated for Noon.
