GREENSBORO, N.C. -- The host Greensboro Pride swept Meredith College in USA South doubleheader action Sunday. GC won game one 3-0 and finished with a 4-1 win for the sweep.
The Avenging Angels made little movement on offense throughout the first game with just four hits in the loss. Susanne Taylor singled in the first, and Bryce Smith advanced to first on a hit up the middle in the fourth. Meredith put two on base in the fifth with a walk from Cecilia Coleman, who advanced to second with help from an error in the next at-bat. Madison Hamilton led off in the sixth with a hit through the left side, and Charley Cox sacrificed to advance the runner to second. One final flurry in the seventh kick started by a hit from Alyssa Drake but concluded with a walk from Anna Goldman.
In the bottom of the third, Greensboro loaded the bases and scored a run on a groundout to second base. The Pride scored two more in the sixth with help from an outfield throwing error.
The Pride defense held Meredith at second throughout the game, and Maddy Wetherholt recorded a complete game victory earning no runs with four strikeouts and a pair of walks. Sarah Gundlach earned the loss allowing six hits, a pair of earned runs, and one walk.
Meredith enjoyed more success at the plate in game two with seven players recording a hit, and Drake notching two. Drake's first single came opened the third inning, and Kelsey Mabe followed with a bunt-single to put two on base for the Avenging Angels. Both runners advanced a base on a deep fly ball from Madison Hamilton, and Bryce Smith drove in Drake with a two-out, infield RBI-single.
Gundlach pitched a second complete game in the nightcap, earning all four Pride runs in 10 hits with one walk, striking out one. Cheyanne Cox recorded the win for Greensboro, earning Meredith's run, while striking out five.
The Avenging Angels travel to Averett Wednesday afternoon for a midweek play day before returning to their home field next weekend for a pair of USA South doubleheaders.
