Scavone Claims 100th and 101st USA South Wins with Sweep Over Monarchs

Bryce Smith

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Meredith College softball collected a pair of wins Saturday at Methodist University. The Avenging Angels won game one 1-0 with an RBI-single form Bryce Smith, followed by a 5-2 victory to close out the sweep.

Meredith's head coach since 2010, Kim Scavone collected her 100th USA South win in the first game of today's doubleheader.

Game 1
The Avenging Angels recorded six hits and a clean defense to finish off the Monarchs with a single run scored in the first inning. Kelsey Mabe advanced to second on a bunt-single with a stolen base, and Smith drove her hit up the middle to bring Mabe home for the game winning run early in the day. Susanne Taylor closed out the frame with a hit, and Anna Goldman picked up a single in the second.

Smith's second hit came in the sixth, and Alyssa Drake drilled one to left center clearing three bases in the seventh.

Sarah Gundlach recorded her eighth win, allowing four hits and striking out three Monarchs in a complete game shutout. Brittany Jones earned the loss for Methodist.

Game 2
The Avenging Angels maintained their momentum in the second with another leadoff single from Mabe.

Scoreless through the first frame, Smith tagged her third hit on the day with a leadoff single up the middle, and Taylor puched the runner to second with another hit. Drake sacrificed to advance the runners, and Goldman placed a double in right field to score both.

Methodist finally scored with help from an infield error and three hits in the bottom of two to tie the score. But a pair of hits from Taylor and Drake setup Savannah Pierce for an RBI-single in the fourth to edge the Angels back in front.

Another Drake single in the sixth, followed by a sac-bunt from Goldman set-up the Avenging Angels for another rally. Pierce pushed Drake to the corner with a single up the middle and stole second. Drake scored on a wild pitch, and Pierce moved to the corner for an RBI-single from Emily Velazquez to put MCSB out of reach for good.

Sarah Gundlach relieved Payton Aldridge in the fourth inning to earn the win for the Angels, her ninth on the year. Monarch Jordyn Propst recorded the loss for Methodist.

The Avenging Angels head to Newport News, Virginia, tomorrow to face off with the top-ranked NCAA Division III program in Christopher Newport. The Captains claimed both games in a doubleheader earlier in the season. Follow live action HERE.
