NEWPORT NEWS, Va. -- Meredith College softball traveled to Newport News Sunday for a second pairing versus the now top-ranked Christopher Newport Captains in non-conference action. CNU finished game one early 11-2 and won 6-2 in the second.

Game 1
The Captains held Meredith to just thirteen batters in four innings until back-to-back home runs put two runs on the board for the Avenging Angels. In the fifth Alyssa Drake and Anna Goldman recorded a pair of one-out solo-homers for Meredith. But Christopher Newport ended the frame with a nine-run advantage to finish the game in five.

Sarah Gundlach and Gianna Buccelato shared time in the circle for Meredith with Gundlach earning the loss. She pitched 1.2 innings allowing five hits, three runs with one walk and one strikeout. Emily Weatherholtz claimed her seventh win pitching a complete game versus the Angels.

Game 2
CNU created an early gap with six runs in the first three innings, but a Meredith home run from Bryce Smith broke the cycle to land the Angels on the scoreboard. In the fourth Chloe Johnson and Cecilia Coleman advanced on a pair of hits, and Charley Cox earned an infield RBI-single. Goldman and Coleman advanced to first in the next two innings, but the Captains defense closed down the Angels for the win.

Payton Aldridge and Susanne Taylor shared the pitching assignment for the Avenging Angels with Aldridge owning the loss. Trish Webb closed out the game for Christopher Newport to earn the win.

Meredith is slated to face off with neighboring Shaw University Tuesday afternoon at Worthdale Park in Raleigh, N.C. Senior day is scheduled for Saturday versus William Peace with the USA South Tournament on the horizon.
