RALEIGH, N.C. -- As the Meredith College Avenging Angels near the end of regular season play, the team picked up a pair of non-conference wins Wednesday versus nearby Shaw University. Cecilia Coleman launched a pair of home runs in game two to score five RBIs in a 14-2, five-inning finish. MCSB won the opener 8-0 in six.

Meant as an away play day for the Avenging Angels, the doubleheader was shifted a day and moved to Meredith as the best venue option after storms passed through Raleigh earlier in the week.

Game 1
The Avenging Angels jumped out to a quick 5-0 lead in the first inning and closed out the game early in six innings. Kelsey Mabe opened with an in-the-park homer to the right center fence, and Charley Cox advanced on a walk. Bryce Smith tripled next to score Cox, and Susanne Taylor notched her third career-home run to score two. Anna Goldman hit a one-out double to drive in Madison Hamilton, who singled through the left side.

The Bears led off with a single in the bottom of the frame, but Sarah Gundlach recorded her first-of-six strikeouts to move Meredith back towards the dugout. A scoreless second returned the Avenging Angels to the dugout, and Emily Velazquez drove in Goldman, who picked up two extra bases on a fielding error after her single earlier in the frame.

Meredith loaded the bases in the fifth but left all three runners stranded, but scored two more in the sixth to finish the game early.

Gundlach pitched for her 10th career win, allowing two hits with two walks, striking out six. The game marked her fourth shutout and 11th complete game on the season.

Game 2
MCSB spread out their 14 runs in the second, beginning with two-out RBI-single for Madison Hamilton. Chloe Johnson and Coleman crushed a pair of hits down the left field line in the second, and Bryce Smith drove in Johnson. Four more runs in the third came with a pair of walks from Hamilton and Alyssa Drake, followed by an RBI-single from Johnson. And Coleman's first homer drove in three more for a 6-0 Meredith advantage.

Shaw advanced two runners on a pair of hits in the bottom of the frame and loaded the bases on an infield misstep. Defensive miscommunication with the next hit allowed two Bears to score before the Avenging Angels put an end to the rally.

Susanne Taylor drilled a double down the right field line in the fourth, and Hamilton pushed the runner to the corner with a single. Drake scored both with help from a throwing error.

Payton Aldridge relieved Taylor in the circle and led a quick bottom half of the frame to Coleman back to the plate for home run number-two. Each of Meredith's next four batters advanced to first, and Hamilton scored Cox on a sac-fly. Drake scored the next, unearned, and a Johnson double drove in two more to finish out the scoring.

Taylor earned the win, and Shaw's Joan Wendt recorded both losses for the visitors.

The Avenging Angels are slated to host William Peace Saturday, April 13, at 1 p.m. Senior Day celebrations are slated for in between games.
