Basketball Holds On for 62-56 Win Over Covenant; New Championship Banner Hangs

RALEIGH, N.C. - Leading by as many as 21 points in today's USA South action versus the Covenant Scots, Meredith College hit 8-of-10 free throws down the stretch to claim a 62-56 win. Leading scorer McKenzi Edwards was a perfect 11-of-11 from the stripe in her 23-point performance.

The Avenging Angels out paced Covenant during the first 20 minutes and carried a 19-point advantage into the locker room at the half.

After a slow start in the second period, Meredith scored five consecutive points to extend their lead to 21 with 14:59 remaining in regulation.

The teams exchanged points during the next 10 minutes with the Avenging Angels holding on to a 52-35 lead at 5:06.

Covenant's Rose Doyle scored after a miscue by the Angels and the Scots added 14 more in a 16-2 run to cut the Meredith lead to five with just 1:36 left on the clock.

The Avenging Angels' impressive 81.8 percent from the free throw line helped secure the program's third conference victory of the season.

Kim Hinton and Raven Gregory took care of business inside with seven rebounds apiece. Hinton added nine points and Gregory six. Edwards distributed five assists in her stellar performance, and Diana Owens recorded three in just two minutes on the floor.

The visitor's Jessie Blankenship scored a team-high 15 points and nine rebounds. Haley Soles added a dozen points, including three from behind the arc, and added five assists.

Meredith travels to cross-town rival William Peace Wednesday, January 29, for a 7 p.m. tip-off. Admission into the game will be by ticket only, and doors open at 6 p.m. Meredith fans may secure a ticket beginning Tuesday at 10 a.m. in Weatherspoon 17. A valid CamCard is required at pick-up.

A highlight of today's event occurred during a halftime ceremony in honor of the 2013 USA South Women's Cross Country Champions. The Meredith College harriers earned a new championship banner which now hangs from the rafter in Weatherspoon Gym.
