FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - Tied at third in USA South North division standings heading into tonight's basketball game, the host Methodist Monarchs cruised past Meredith 33-17 in the first half of tonight's league action to claim the eventual 61-47 win. Avenging Angel McKenzi Edwards scored a game-high 20 points in the loss.
Meredith held its only lead on a putback from Kim Hinton in the first play of the game.
The Monarchs took control early on a 13-2 run during the next five minutes of play to hold a 13-4 advantage.
After trading points through the next seven minutes, the Monarchs closed the half on an 11-2 run to secure a 16-point lead heading into the break.
The Avenging Angel offense recovered in the final 20 minutes of play with Edwards scoring 16 second-half points, but the 28-24 performance was not enough to mend an 18.9 first period field goal percentage.
Raven Gregory led Meredith with six rebounds and chipped in four points. Laquetta Hairston and Hinton added six points apiece, with Hinton adding five boards. Edwards picked up four steals and five rebounds to add to her double-digit scoring effort.
Methodist's Jackie Lyles and Chandler Christensen led the offensive effort for the Monarchs with 15 and 10 points, respectively. Lyles completed a double-double with 10 rebounds, and Ayanna Pegues tallied a dozen in the win.
The Avenging Angels remain on the road this weekend traveling first to Averett for a 2 p.m. Saturday tip followed by the Greensboro Pride Sunday afternoon.
