DEMOREST, Ga. -- The Meredith College basketball team made a strong run at the Huntingdon Hawks Friday afternoon in day two of the Piedmont College Cancer Awareness Tournament. Jessi Hayes scored a season-high 22 points, but a tough third period left the Avenging Angels with a 66-56 loss.
The Angels fought an even battle through the first 20 minutes of play heading into the locker room at the half down by just three points. But the team turned the ball over 10-of-25 times in the third frame to slip to a 13 point deficit heading into the final period.
Hayes turned up the offensive pressure scoring 10 points with a pair of steals, but the Hawks managed to hold off a late game surge from Meredith.
Hayes added seven rebounds, two assists to her totals, and Amy Rhoney finished with 11 points and seven boards. Chandler Hines notched eight points with a pair of assists, and Meghan Pleasants recorded six points, five rebounds.
Huntingdon's Juliette Harp and Maia Hill tallied 37 of the Hawks' points with Mia Hudson leading the game with 12 rebounds.
The Avenging Angels return to action after the New Year facing off with cross-town rival William Peace Saturday, Jan. 7. Tickets will NOT be distributed for this game since neither school will be back in session.
