Struggling Offense Leads to 61-36 Loss to Panthers

FERRUM, Va. -- The Meredith College basketball team dropped Saturday's USA South contest 61-36 versus the East Division's leader Ferrum College. Jessi Hayes notched 16 points in the loss.

The Panthers handed Meredith their 4th league loss and 13th overall after scoring 17 points off of 22 Avenging Angel miscues. Combined with Meredith's struggle at the free throw line, hitting just 3-of-12 from the stripe, the Angels just could not catch a break versus the hosts.

Meredith trailed by just three at the half, but the Panthers dropped in four threes and five-of-nine free throws to extend their advantage to 18 points at the end of the third period.

Hayes was disqualified three minutes into the fourth quarter, but the Angels continued to battle. Amy Rhoney drained a three-pointer, her only field goal in the game, with 1:22 left in regulation, and Maddie Gladwell followed with a jumper. But the effort was too late to catch-up with Ferrum.

Hayes tallied five rebounds, two assists, and two steals before leaving the game with her game-high point total. Rhoney grabbed six boards, and Kirstie King dropped in six points with five rebounds. Meghan Pleasants notched five boards, two assists, adding one field goal for the Angels.

Ferrum's Zarkia Mattox posted a double-double with 13 points, 10 rebounds, and Jessie O'Connor came off the bench to tally 11 rebounds with four points for the Panthers.

The Angels remain on the road Sunday for a 2 p.m. pairing at Mary Baldwin before heading across town to William Peace Tuesday evening to make-up the game missed in early January. Follow the live action HERE.
