RALEIGH, N.C. -- Senior Jessi Hayes recorded 10 rebounds, three assists, and two steals as the Meredith College basketball team captured a 58-31 win over visiting Mary Baldwin to close out the season Sunday afternoon. Rookie Maddie Gladwell led the Angels with a career-high 17 points on 7-of-11 shooting.
The Avenging Angels shot a third-best season record with nine three-point baskets to pull away from the Fighting Squirrels in today's USA South action.
MBU led off the game with a pair of free throws from an administrative technical foul against the Angels, but Meredith quickly took the lead on a 10-0 run. Gladwell handled the next three possessions with a putback off an Amy Rhoney offensive board, a steal and layup next, followed by an assist to Hayes beyond the arc for three. Meredith continued to attack as Janah Hassell capped off the quarter with a mid-range jumper.
Hines opened the second stanza with a quick three, but Baldwin responded with three consecutive jumpers to pull to within eight. A pair of Meredith threes kept MBU at a distance, but the Fighting Squirrels trailed by just 10 at the half.
After the intermission Gladwell fed Rhoney for a layup and followed with back-to-back three pointers to jump start the period with another 10-point rally. Meredith's defensive pressure held Baldwin to just four points until Khaihiqa Davidson netted a three-pointer at the buzzer.
The Avenging Angels managed the game on both ends in the final period to capture the win.
Gladwell added a career-high four steals with four assists, and Kirstie King recorded nine points with seven rebounds and a pair of steals. Brittany Preston tallied seven points, and Hassell finished with four.
Baldwin's Davidson and Aayana Nedd led with 11 points apiece in the loss.
Head Coach Melinda Campbell and her staff recognized Hayes' outstanding four-year career just prior to today's tipoff.
