Strong Performance Falls Short in 71-64 Loss to Maroons

Kimberly Schuh

SALEM, Va. -- Meredith College basketball rookie Kimberly Schuh posted her first career double-double with 21 points, 10 rebounds to lead the Angels in a close 71-64 loss to the Roanoke Maroons Sunday. The New Year's Eve contest was part of Roanoke's Susan Dunagan Holiday Classic.

The Avenging Angels trailed by one point with just over three minutes remaining in regulation, but Roanoke resisted the pressure to secure their fourth win this winter.

Today's performance ranks as one of Meredith's best this season with their second highest point total and second-fewest turnovers. Trailing by 10 points at the break, Chandler Hines hit three-of-four from beyond the arc to pull the Angels to within three with one period left in the game.

Schuh tallied seven points and Katherine Holmes knocked down a pair of key field goals, but Roanoke made free throws down the stretch to hold on for the win.

Hines finished with 16 points, and Madison Gladwell scored 9 with five assists. Meghan Pleasants dropped in eight points with as many rebounds, and Janah Hassell grabbed six boards, adding one assist and one bucket.

Laura McManimen led the Maroons with 16 points, and Corinne McPadden scored 11 points with seven steals in the win.

Meredith returns to the USA South campaign next weekend traveling to Averett and Mary Baldwin. Follow the Avenging Angels throughout the weekend as they takeover the conference Instagram account (usa_south).
