Meredith Basketball Hosts Championship Celebration

Meredith College Champions

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The visiting N.C. Wesleyan Bishops shut down the Meredith College basketball team in the fourth quarter to capture a 72-59 victory in Weatherspoon Gymnasium Saturday. During halftime of the USA South contest, the athletics department celebrated the success of eight championship teams between fall 2015 and fall 2017.

Meredith's high scorer Kimberly Schuh scored 10 of her game high 16 points during the first quarter to keep the Avenging Angels close to Wesleyan. She drove to the basket early in the second stanza for a layup and ended a more than two minute scoring drought with another one.

Chandler Hines drained a three, and Kirstie King finished off a three-point play to even the score at 25. The teams remained close through the rest of the period and entered the half tied at 34.

Meredith edged into the lead early in the third frame on a bucket from Hines and goal inside the paint from Meghan Pleasants. Wesleyan's Keshae Parker finally dropped in a field goal for the visitors, but Pleasants knocked down two more to keep the Angels out front.

N.C. Wesleyan began to chip away at Meredith's advantage, and Javana Jones found the basket late in the quarter to edge the Bishops into the lead heading into the final 10 minutes of play.

Parker opened the fourth with a pair of layups leading the Bishops to a 10-point advantage until Pleasants finally interrupted the rally at 6:31. Pleasants scored again, but the Bishops matched her efforts to maintain an eight-point spread. Wesleyan continued to advance their lead forcing an Angel timeout at 3:14. The break did little to hold back the Bishops, who made their free throws down the stretch to finish off the Angels for the win.

Schuh was one of four Angels in double figures with 16 points, adding eight rebounds. Pleasants finished with 12, and King notched 11 points, matching Schuh's eight boards. Hines hit a pair of threes en route to 10 points, and Madison Gladwell tallied six points.

Jones led the Bishops with 15, and Weslie Young grabbed a game high 10 rebounds to go along with 11 points for the only double-double on the day.

The Avenging Angels cap off a USA South doubleheader Sunday afternoon with a 2 p.m. home game versus rival Methodist University.
