GREENSBORO, N.C. — The Meredith College Angels opened a doubleheader weekend with a 73-60 loss to non-conference foe Guilford College. Madison Gladwell led the game with 21 points.
Meredith scored just seven points in the first quarter and would never find a way back in the game. Guilford's Calyn Davis dropped her first of three three-pointers in the opening seconds of the game as the Quakers netted five in the period to jump out front early 25-7.
But MCBB bounced back with help from a quick three-point play from Gladwell to open the second quarter. Kirstie King scored inside, and Brittany Preston followed, suiting up in her first game of the season.
The Angels shut down Davis and gave up just two from beyond the arc to defend the Quakers through the quarter. Add in a steady MCBB offensive series, and Meredith entered the half trailing by a manageable 15.
After the intermission the Avenging Angels played even with Guilford but would never find a way to edge in front.
Kimberly Schuh and Caroline Coleman both finished in double digits, scoring a combined 25, and King notched 8 points, six rebounds. Trinity Packer scored a pair of field goals to go along with four boards and two steals.
With fall semester final exams behind them, the Avenging Angels host Mary Baldwin University tomorrow at 2 p.m. before enjoying a short break for the holiday. Meredith returns to action once more just before the New Year. Follow Saturday's action live HERE.
