DANVILLE, Va. -- Kimberly Schuh led Meredith College with 26 points, nine rebounds in a 72-56 loss to the host Averett Cougars in Saturday's USA South action.
The Avenging Angels average more than 30 percent from beyond the arc this season but fell short with just two long-range baskets today, both from Brittany Preston. Averett's deep bench contributed 21 points to the Cougar total, and 15 offensive rebounds led to a dozen second chance points inside, to give AU an edge.
With the score even at eight through the first seven minutes of play, Averett hit back-to-back three pointers and cruised to a 19-11 first quarter advantage. In the second stanza MCBB hit five-of-five from the charity stripe to keep pace with the Cougars but would enter the break down by nine.
Meredith continued to battle in the third frame but would not find a way to interrupt Averett's effort. And the Cougars continued to widen the gap through the final quarter with help from a trio of three-pointers, each from a different shooter.
Schuh went eight-for-eight from the free throw line to lead the game with total points. Kirstie King grabbed seven rebounds to go along with her season-high 13 points, and Madison Gladwell picked up four steals with seven points for the Avenging Angels.
Brooke Carthon and Alixis Roccia led the Cougar offense, scoring more than half of Averett's points.
MCBB remains on the road tomorrow traveling north to Mary Baldwin University for a 2 p.m. rematch with the Fighting Squirrels.
