VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. - The host Virginia Wesleyan Marlins outlasted Meredith College lacrosse 16-12 to capture Sunday's final regular season match. The second-seeded Avenging Angels are set to face off with third-seeded Greensboro in Friday's 3:30 p.m. semifinal pairing of the USA South Tournament.
MC Lax led Virginia Wesleyan 8-5 at the half, but a 4-0 rally in the final 4:47 of play put the Marlins out front for the win.
Lottie Meadows, Jennifer Halvorson and Victoria Doyle led the Angels with three goals apiece, and Doyle notched a team-high five groundballs, adding four draw controls. Danielle Lee tallied five draw controls, three assists and one goal.
Va. Wesleyan's Megan Shallock led all with five goals, seven groundballs and six draw controls to lead the Marlins to victory.
Doyle extended Meredith's first half advantage to five with back-to-back scores in the opening minutes of the second period. But the Marlins responded with six unanswered points to take their first lead since the fourth minute of the match.
The Angels scored two of the next three goals to tie the match at 12, but Virginia Wesleyan closed out the game on a 4-0 run to collect the win.
