RALEIGH, N.C. -- In Saturday's USA South action, Meredith College lacrosse handed the visiting Piedmont College Lions their first conference loss today with a 22-3 finish. Julie Capretti and Lilia Cruz led the Avenging Angels with six points apiece.
MC Lax assumed quick control of the match scoring a bevy of goals during the first 10 minutes of play. Carlee Joseph scored first off a pass from Cruz, and Holly Hite forced a pair of Lion turnovers leading to back-to-back unassisted goals from Jordyn King and Maria Codispoti.
Capretti scored her first on a free position attempt, and Hanna Anderson dished out a quick assist to Joseph in the next series to extend the Angels' lead to five at 23:06. Meredith controlled the next three draws and scored quickly off each before Piedmont's Rowan Bumpass and Cassidy Heflin connected to put the Lions on the board.
PC picked up the next draw, but Cameron Ruffin forced a turnover to give the ball back to MC Lax. Sarah Arbes collected the loose ball, and Cruz finished the play in the box with her 18th career goal this season.
Hite and King controlled the next two draws, as Capretti scored twice on five Meredith attempts at the net to spread the gap to 10. Anderson scored her 19th goal in the next play before Head Coach Lauren Scott relieved a handful of her starters. Rachel Argabright's free position attempt was stopped by Lion keeper Mattie Keaton, but Ruffin caused a turnover on the clear attempt for another Angels attack. Meredith would not convert this time, and the Lions finally found the net again in the 12th minute.
Caitlin O'Brien netted a third goal for the Lions on the next draw, but the rally was short lived. Olivia Higgs found rookie Brooke Leithead in the crease for her fourth career goal, and the Avenging Angels scored three more before the buzzer to end the half with the Angels holding a 14-point lead.
Coach Scott played a two-team rotation throughout the second period, as Meredith closed out the win with a selfless and classy 30 minutes.
Capretti led the match with five goals, and Joseph and Cruz tallied three apiece. Cruz added three assists, and dished out one. Hite notched eight draw controls, three caused turnovers, and three ground balls to along with a pair of goals, one assist, and Anderson two each of caused turnovers, ground balls, draw controls, goals, and assists. Ruffin tallied a pair of caused turnovers, and Arbes finished with draw controls and two ground balls in the win.
Each of Piedmont's goals were scored by different players with Heflin notching four draw controls, one ground ball, and one assist.
MC Lax played all three goalies with Haley Whitfield starting for the win with one save. Joy Deitrich entered at the break recording one stop, and Sydney Hardee relieved Deitrich midway through the half. Keaton earned the loss for Piedmont with six saves on the day.
