VIRGINIA BEACH, Va. -- Meredith College lacrosse cruised to a 20-6 victory at Virginia Wesleyan Sunday, and Lilia Cruz once again led the Avenging Angels in total points with eight.
Cruz scored five goals with three assists, and Holly Hite led all with six goals, six draw controls. Julie Capretti tallied six points with four goals, and Olivia Higgs finished the day with five. Sarah Arbes forced five turnovers and picked up as many draw controls with a trio of ground balls.
Meredith opened the match with an 8-0 lead through the midpoint of the first frame and went on to finish out the period leading 14-1 at the half. Haley Whitfield deflected two-of-three Marlin shots on goal, and Abby Shope found a gap to score VWU's only point late in the period.
The Avenging Angels maintained control throughout the second stanza scoring six of the first seven points. Joy Deitrich replaced Whitfield in goal for MC Lax six minutes into the period and stopped four, but the Marlins managed to find the net four times down the stretch to finish with six on the day.
Henley Peatross scored twice for the Avenging Angels, both in the first half, and rookie Maya Flake assisted on three Meredith goals with one caused turnover. Natalie Purcell, Brittany Wartman, and Ansley Harris forced a combined four turnovers with a fifth credited to Whitfield.
The Angels take a short break from competition and return to action March 4 at Salem to open the USA South season.
