SALISBURY, Md. -- The host Salisbury Sea Gulls, ranked fifth in the latest national coaches poll, demonstrated their strengths in a 16-7 victory over Meredith College Tuesday evening. Holly Hite led the match with five goals in seven shots, collecting 10 draw controls.
The Avenging Angels used everything in their arsenal to hold back the Sea Gulls, including Hite's knack for pulling in the draw. She picked up the first one of the match and finished the play with one-of-two free position goals. Salisbury forced two MC turnovers resulting in a pair of goals, but Lilia Cruz found Hite for another point nearly five minutes later.
Salisbury edged back into the lead with an eight-meter goal, but Olivia Higgs charged in for her one point of the match after a Meredith clear to even the score once more.
But six different members of a seasoned Salisbury squad scored six consecutive goals through the rest of the period to pull ahead for good.
With a six-point first-half lead, the Sea Gulls continued to attack early in the second frame. But Meredith pushed back and netted four goals through the half.
Ten Gulls contributed to the point total with Gabby Mongno netting three goals, one assist.
Haley Whitfield started in goal for MC Lax, recording the loss with five saves, and Joy Deitrich entered at the break, collecting eight stops in 14 Salisbury attempts. Skye Graham earned the win for Salisbury.
In the midst of spring break, the Avenging Angels travel south to warmer weather to face off with the Lynchburg Hornets at the Joe DiMaggio Sports Complex, in Clearwater, Fla., Thursday evening. Follow a live video broadcast HERE.
