FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- The Meredith College lacrosse team returned to conference action Wednesday afternoon and cruised to a 20-2 victory over the USA South's Methodist Monarchs. Lilia Cruz led the Angels with nine points, and rookie Maya Flake dished out a match-high five assists.
Led by six from Holly Hite, MC Lax controlled the draw, 16-7, and shots with 31 to just seven from the Monarchs. Seven Avenging Angels contributed to Meredith's 20 goals, including four from Hite and three apiece from Henley Peatross and Olivia Blake. Julie Capretti found the box twice and found Peatross and Cruz for the first two goals of the second half.
Defensively, Sarah Arbes forced a pair of MU turnovers with as many ground balls, and collected five draw controls to drive Meredith's offense. Flake and Hite recorded a pair of ground balls apiece, and eight Angels, including Natalie Purcell and Brittany Wartman, created opportunities on the defensive end of the field.
Both MC Lax goalies spent time in the box for a combined two stops, and Haley Whitfield notched the win. MU's Mary Ellen Kelliher earned her third loss, recording six saves and three ground balls.
The Avenging Angels continue with their non-conference schedule this weekend, facing off Saturday with nationally ranked Mary Washington. The Eagles sit in fourth in the latest IWLCA poll with a 7-1 record, losing only to second-ranked Franklin & Marshall. Follow the live action HERE.
