DANVILLE, Va. -- Meredith College junior attack Olivia Higgs led the Avenging Angels with 10 points in a 24-1 victory over the USA South's Averett Cougars.
MC Lax scored seven goals in the first 15 minutes of play and added three more through 12:15 to set the clock on autopilot. The Angels closed out the half with a 15-0 lead and a clear advantage over the Cougars.
AU scored quickly in the second half after controlling the opening draw. But Holly Hite controlled the next draw and finished off the series with an eight-meter goal. Averett's Elizabeth Peasley collected three more draw controls for the Cougars, but the Angels defended their efforts to put away the hosts for good.
Julie Capretti scored five with a pair of assists, and Hite recorded six goals with a game-high seven draw controls with one caused turnovers and one ground ball. Sarah Arbes led the defense forcing five AU turnovers with five draw controls and as many ground balls. She tallied two points on the other end of the field as well.
Rookie Maya Flake dished out five assists with a pair of goals, and classmate Olivia Black tallied five points on three assists, two goals. Henley Peatross netted two in the first half with one assist and two draw controls.
The Avenging Angels host Randolph-Macon Saturday at 1 p.m. in one final non-conference match of the spring season. Next Tuesday, the pairing with William Peace will be played on the Angels turf beginning at 7 p.m.
