Yellow Jackets Finish Off Lacrosse, 20-10

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College lacrosse team suffered a disappointing non-conference loss Saturday as the visiting Yellow Jackets of Randolph-Macon College closed out the match with a 20-10 victory. Holly Hite led with six goals, six caused turnovers, and Sarah Arbes battled for a match-high nine draw controls.

MC Lax marked today's match as Lax for Leukemia in honor of Meredith's Athletic Director Jackie Myers. All donations will be directed to the American Cancer Society to help fund research, treatment, and support for those with cancer.

The Avenging Angels opened with a a pair of quick goals after two Arbes draw controls, but RMC responded with two of their own. In the next series a Hite caused turnover led to her second unassisted goal of the match, but Randolph-Macon controlled the next three draws and finished with three corresponding goals to edge into the lead 5-3.

Haley Whitfield stopped an attempt by Jacket Lily Henderson in the 19th minute, and rookie Olivia Blake finished the Angels' possession with an eight-meter goal at the other end of the turf. Hite forced another turnover in the next series and evened the score at five with help from a ground ball pickup from Arbes.

Randolph-Macon's goalie Elicia Wells interfered with four Meredith attempts before Olivia Higgs finally found a gap with just over six minutes remaining in the period. Still trailing by three, Meredith was unable to stop the Yellow Jackets, who scored two more before the end of the period to lead the match 11-6 at the intermission.

RMC's Mary castle opened the second period with two more goals to extend the visitor's lead to seven. Hite collected the draw and Wells stopped Blake's shot. A ground ball pickup by Julia Doyle led to another Higgs point to cut into the Jackets' lead. After six more MC Lax chances at the box, Julie Capretti finally netted a shot with 18 minutes left in regulation and a five-goal differential.

But the Yellow Jackets scored four unanswered goals in the next six minutes to advance their lead to nine with just 13:06 left on the clock. Head Coach Lauren Scott burned her final timeout, and Hite returned to the field for two unassisted goals. But MC Lax would not find a way to stop the balanced offense from Randolph-Macon, as the Jackets finished off the match with three more goals from three different players to win the game.

Capretti and Higgs finished with two goals apiece, and Blake added one. Higgs also recorded a pair of caused turnovers and three ground balls to assist on the defensive end of the field. Natalie Purcell and Briana Petrusa forced one turnover apiece, and Ansley Harris picked up two ground balls in the loss.

Castle led the Jackets with four goals, but seven Randolph-Macon players delievered at least two goals in the win.

Whitfield recorded the loss for Meredith with 10 saves in 47 minutes, and Joy Deitrich finished off the match with two saves. Wells tallied 20 stops for the Yellow Jackets in her fifth win on the season.

The Avenging Angels return to their home turf Tuesday night in a USA South battle versus the first-year program of William Peace. The first draw is slated for 7 p.m. under the lights.
