Avenging Angels Maintain Control of League with 24-3 Victory Over Peace

Julie Capretti on the attack

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College Avenging Angels downed the first-year women's lacrosse program of William Peace 24-3 Tuesday evening to remain in solid control of the USA South. Six Angels scored at least three goals with Julie Capretti leading the match with five, and Holly Hite collected 13 draw controls.

Meant to be a road game for Meredith, the match was recently moved to the Avenging Angels' home turf as the best venue available. And MC Lax used their home field advantage to make quick work of the Pacers.

Meredith scored nine goals in nine minutes before William Peace Pacer Dana Florian netted her first-of-three with just under 20 minutes left in the first period. Capretti followed with an eight-meter goal, and Hite recorded back-to-back winners for a 12-1 lead.

Florian scored quickly off a Pacer draw control from Allison Schaper, but Capretti led a 7-0 Angels run, including a trio of goals from Henley Peatross and two from Olivia Higgs, to finish out the half.

After assisting on three and scoring two in the first period, Maya Flake opened the second half with two more points for MC Lax. Capretti contributed to the next three Meredith points, including assists for Hite and Olivia Blake, to close out the Angels' scoring. A late Meredith misstep caused by Rylie Toomey allowed Florian to net one final goal with less than a minute left on the clock.

Capretti and Flake recorded seven points apiece, and Hite finished with five including a pair of caused turnovers. Peatross scored four and contributed on a fifth, while grabbing a pair of draws, and Sarah Arbes gathered four draw controls with two caused turnovers and one ground ball. Blake forced a pair of turnovers, and Natalie Purcell caused one late int he first half.

Joy Deitrich guarded the box for the full 60 minutes of play with eight stops on the night. Pacer Alyssa Martinez interfered with a dozen Angels' attempts for WPU.

The Avenging Angels hit the road for a pair of USA South matches this weekend, beginning with Brevard Saturday and closing out with rival Piedmont College Sunday. MC Lax returns to Raleigh Saturday, April 20, for one final regular season match on Senior Day.
