RALEIGH, N.C. -- After capturing the program's sixth consecutive USA South Conference Women's Lacrosse Tournament last Saturday, the Meredith College Avenging Angels head to Lexington, Va., this weekend to open the NCAA Tournament versus the Ithaca Bombers, ranked 20th in the latest IWLCA national poll. The round one match will be played at Washington & Lee University Saturday, May 11, at 1 p.m. with the winner advancing to Sunday's pairing versus the second-ranked Generals.
In five NCAA Tournament appearances Meredith captured the program's first win last spring versus Merchant Marine, and the Angels will try to knock off the tough Bombers this weekend. Ithaca enters the tournament 13-6 overall and 8-2 in the Liberty League. In a 12-11, last second finish in Sunday's Liberty League Championship, Ithaca lost the match and automatic qualifier to William Smith. But the bombers were 1-of-10 teams selected for an at-large bid in the Division III Tournament and will continue their season Saturday.
Meredith ranks first nationally among Division III programs in shot percentage, second in scoring offense, third in points per game, and fourth in draw controls per game entering the 2019 NCAA Tournament. With strong leadership from senior captains Holly Hite, Sarah Arbes, and Julie Capretti, under the direction of four-time USA South Coach of the Year Lauren Scott, the Avenging Angels are prepared for the opening match and always working to advance the MC Lax program.
Due to the timing of this weekend's tournament, seven Meredith lacrosse Angels will miss the College's regular commencement exercises. Understanding the significance of each of Meredith's traditions, including Class Day, Baccalaureate, and Graduation, the administration, led by President Jo Allen and other key players, will host a ceremony Thursday afternoon complete with an abbreviated version of each of the traditions. All members of the college community are welcome to attend, and the program will be streamed live as well.
