Soccer Upset in USA South Tournament

Martinsville, Va. - The Meredith soccer team faced Averett in the USA South Athletic Conference semifinals on Friday night at the Smith River Sports Complex. The #6 Cougars (13-6) upset the #2 Avenging Angels (14-5).

The game remained tied until the 20 minute mark when Averett's Maliha Ataulla scored on an assist from Ringa Remes. The Cougars followed that up with another goal 20 minutes later from a goal from Annika Rindestedt assisted by Johan Ingebrigtsen. Averett took the 2-0 lead into halftime.

The Avenging Angels stormed out in the second half as Eliza Evans scored unassisted to cut the Cougar lead to one with 39 minutes remaining in the game. Meredith kept the pressure on but could not get the goal to tie up the game.  Evans was named to the All-Tournament team for her efforts.

Meredith outshot Averett 18-11 and held the advantage on corner kicks 7-4.

The Avenging Angels finish their season at the USA South Conference tournament.
