RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College squad extended their winning streak to five Wednesday night with a 2-1 victory over the visiting Averett Cougars. The win moves the Angels into second place behind Ferrum with the two teams set to face off Saturday in Raleigh.
Ellice Johnson delivered a pass up the middle to Jessica Wallace for a 50-yard drive in the 14th minute. Wallace finished the play with a shot across to the far right corner of the box to open the scoring.
After several unsuccessful attempts at the net during the next 29 minutes of play, Kayla Boudreau slipped a shot into the corner from five yards out to give the Avenging Angels a 2-0 lead heading into the break. Hannah Elvington assisted on the play. The defensive efforts from Olivia DeBellis, Molly Thomas, and Cassie Padilla, along with keeper Jaisa Loch, managed to hold off any pressure from the Cougars.
Meredith recorded 10 shots and six corner kicks in the second frame but would not find a gap. The Angels staved off a threat from a corner opportunity in the 72nd minute, but Katie Abelseth found the net in the final minute of play to put the Cougars on the board. Averett gained control of the ball again in the final seconds but the clock ran out to leave the Avenging Angels with a well-played regulation victory.
Loch recorded five stops her ninth win in goal for the Angels, and Bailee Brown took the loss for AU with 11 saves in her complete game played.
Meredith hosts Ferrum in the team's Kick Cancer match Saturday. First kick is slated for 1 p.m., and Sarge's Chef on Wheels food truck will be on hand for fans and families on campus for Parents Day to enjoy lunch. The Angels' five seniors will be recognized Sunday before the 1 p.m. home match versus Mary Baldwin.
