RALEIGH, N.C. -- Olivia DeBellis found Cassie Padilla for the only goal in Saturday's USA South East Division quarterfinal as the top-seeded Meredith College Angels downed the fifth-seeded Averett Cougars. Meredith advanced to the semifinals as the host institution for the final two rounds of tournament action November 4-5.
Meredith will face off at Noon Friday, Nov. 4 with the West Division's third-seeded Piedmont Lions, who upset Covenant to advance. The West's top-seeded Salem Spirits will battle with the East's second-seeded Methodist Monarchs at 3 p.m. Both matches will be played on the turf field at Meredith with the championship round slated for 2 p.m. Saturday.
In today's action DeBellis drove up the middle and passed off to Padilla racing upfield to her left. Padilla dribbled in from 25 yards out to score the game winner in the 81st minute of regulation.
The Angels controlled the action throughout the first period, but AU returned after the intermission ready to battle. Both defensive lines worked tirelessly to protect the box.
Jaisa Loch recorded four stops in her 11th win and fourth shutout on the season. Bailee Brown collected the loss for Averett with 11 saves on the day.
