Soccer Falls Short 1-0 to Monarchs in USA South Title Match

Meredith College soccer team

MARYVILLE, Tenn. -- In Saturday night's USA South Women's Soccer Championship match, the East #2 Meredith College Angels lost a hard fought battle 1-0 in overtime to rival Methodist University. Samantha Litt, Jaisa Loch, Molly Thomas, and Jessica Wallace earned All-Tournament honors for their efforts throughout the tournament.

With 7 stops on the night, Loch's 307 career saves set a new standard among Meredith's all-time record holders. She also closes out her decorated four-year career as the Avenging Angels all-time leader with 52 career wins.

Cassie Padilla served up Meredith's first opportunity during the first 10 minutes at the net with a header that curved wide left of the net. MU followed with back-to-back crosses from Sara Snotherly, but Methodist would not score. The first corner of the match led to a shot from Monarch Caitlyn Shae that was intercepted by Meredith defender Kirstie King.

Meredith goalie Loch remained busy in the box as Jasmine Newman launched an attempt down the middle with under 30 minutes remaining in the period. Thomas blocked an attempt from Emoily Borel, and Loch deflected a strike from Newman on the loose ball. MU continued the series with a near miss from Shea that hit the crossbar.

With 12 minutes left in the half Litt crossed the field to Kayla Boudreau, who finished the play just wide from the corner of the goal. Monarch Alexa Smith lost her defender at the seven-minute mark for an attempt at the top left corner, but Loch recorded her sixth save on the play.

In the 38th minute of the second period, Methodist broke away with an open look at the goal, but Capri Clark crossed the shot too sharp to miss the box.

A pair of close range MU fouls teed King up for Meredith's offense. The first from the center was collected by the Monarch keeper, and the second intercepted by Clark. With 22 minutes on the clock, King served up a pass from just over the centerline, and Padilla's finish sailed wide left. Another Methodist foul on the left wing 35 yards out offered up another King serve, but Thomas' header was saved by Benton.

The Angels earned a corner kick in the 18th minute, but MU's Sierra Swasey cleared the pass. Padilla found King in the center, but the shot remained wide to leave the match scoreless with time running out.

With just under 10 minutes remaining in regulation, the Monarchs earned a corner on a blocked attempt from Amy Voight. Nothing resulted from the attempt, but a dangerous miss on a goal kick from Loch left the Angels vulnerable again. Loch stopped the play, and the Angels shifted the attack. Litt launched the ball deep into Angel territory, but a cross from Wallace centered on the post.

Each team served up one more shot at their respective goal, but the missed attempts led to an extra period.

MU's Emily Borel closed out the Monarch victory with a long shot into the top left corner pocket. The Monarchs earned the league's automatic qualifier for the NCAA Tournament with tonight's victory.
