Soccer Angels Suffer Disappointing 1-0 Loss to Cougars on Senior Day

The seniors and their families lineup before the match

RALEIGH, N.C. -- The Meredith College soccer Angels suffered a disappointing 1-0 loss to the visiting Averett Cougars Saturday afternoon. Coach Jennie Altherr and the team celebrated seniors Kirstie King, Kat Pike, Molly Thomas, and Jessica Wallace just prior to kickoff.

The Avenging Angels controlled the tempo of today's match with disciplined passing and strategic efforts at the net. Wallace and Thomas finished five plays apiece at the net  but could not find a gap around Cougar keeper Bailee Brown. Madison Gladwell and Lillian Fox contributed a pair of attempts apiece as Meredith out shot AU 14-1 on the day.

Annah Bishop and Katie Carter pushed the ball up the wings, while Morgan Tingen helped Thomas shift the attack from the midfield.

Kirstie King led a defense that handled the offensive efforts of Averett through much of the 90 minutes. But AU's Ashley Ruelo dribbled up the left wing late in the match. Her cross flew just over Pike's head, and Adriana Perez chipped the pass in for her second goal on the season. The Cougars had one more chance at the box with a corner kick Kaitlyn Barbour, but King managed to clear the ball with help from Wallace.

Meredith returns to their home turf Wednesday evening for a USA South pairing versus William Peace University in the team's Kick Cancer contest.
