Maroons Shut Out Soccer, 3-0

SALEM, Va. — The host Roanoke Maroons shut out Meredith College soccer with a 3-0 finish in Wednesday's non-conference road match. 

The Maroons kept MC goalie Miranda Lutz busy throughout the match beginning with their first shot on goal 31 seconds into the action. She defended the box well, stopping 15 overall and none in the first half alone. Roanoke's starting keeper Chris Martin recorded the win with her only stop a quick attempt by Morgan Thomas in the opening seconds just after intermission. Martin's replacement Carrington Lippi notched three saves in her 36:17 in goal.

Amelie Gillies entered the field in the 76th minute and found a way towards the goal, but Lippi interrupted Gillies' attempt. Lillian Fox and Annan Bishop launched back-to-back goals with just six minutes remaining in regulation, and rookie Mia Slaunwhite had a late look stopped by Lippi to leave the Angels wiht their fourth loss on the season.

Roanoke's Hailey Davis and Emma Woods each netted a goal in the first half, and Kathryn Van Orden scored unassisted in the 87th minute to secure the win for the Maroons.

Meredith hosts NCAA Division II Shaw University Sunday afternoon in a 1 p.m. non-conference contest. The Bears launched their varsity women's soccer program in 2017 after competing one year as a club sport.
