Tennis Featured Five Players in Day One of MU Invite

FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. -- Friday's day-one action of the Methodist University Invitational featured five Meredith College tennis Angels in doubles play.

Jacqueline Benton partnered with rookie Gianna Democko in the #1 doubles flight. The pair lost 8-4 to Averett's Sarkinnen/Mattson but advanced to the third round with an 8-0 sweep over Hollins. N.C. Wesleyan's Sorrentino/Barbera defeated Benton/Democko 8-5 in the final round of the consolation bracket.

In the #3 doubles flight sophomore Emily Wilkinson and freshman Kassidy Pitchford dropped their opening match to Methodist to move to the consolation bracket. An 8-1 win over Guilford's Sarkinnen/Mattson advanced the pair to the final round versus the Monarchs. MU claimed the match 8-3 with Alher/Himes.

Newcomer Alice Cox Horton paired with Methodist's Abigail Weisler in the #4 doubles flight. The rookies dropped to the consolation round after an 8-4 loss to Hollins and were eliminated in the next round on an 8-3 loss to Averett.

Singles play is slated to begin Saturday morning at 9 a.m.
