Tennis Concludes Regular Season with 7-2 Victory at Averett

DANVILLE, Va. -- The Meredith College tennis team concluded the 2017 regular season Thursday with a 7-2 victory over the USA South's Averett University. Now the Avenging Angels must wait until the remaining league programs finish for conference tournament seeding.

Meredith will enter the USA South Women's Tennis Tournament as one of the East Division's four seeds. Action is slated to begin Thursday, April 13, at the McCluskey Tennis Center and LaGrange College in LaGrange, Georgia.

In today's match Laura Anne Hatcher and Gillian Emerson downed Jordyn Minton and Ashley Thornton 8-1 at No. 2 doubles, and Emily Wilkinson and Alice Cox Horton swept their opponents at No. 3 to give the Angels a 2-1 advantage heading into singles play. No. 1 doubles pair Cailin Goff and Jacqueline Benton battled in an 8-6 loss.

Hatcher and Wilkinson dominated their singles matches at No. 3 and No. 6, respectively, as both finished 6-0, 6-0. Benton won 6-1, 6-1 over Averett's Miriam Lindberg at No. 4.

Emerson won her first set 6-3 and went on to dominate the second set 6-1 for the win. Sandra Taranhike posted a similar score at No. 5, winning 6-1, 6-3.
