Tennis Angels Win 8-1 at Salem

WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- In Friday's USA South pairing Meredith College tennis defeated the host Salem Spirits 8-1.

The Avenging Angels swept doubles to hold a 3-0 lead early in the match. No. 1 Gillian Emerson was knocked off by her opponent Mavenna Mason 6-2, 6-0, but Emerson's teammates picked her up with five consecutive points for the victory.

Alexandra Cheney finished off Carmen Wilkins on court six, dropping just one game each set, and Emily Wilkinson shut out Lindsey Young for a 6-0, 6-0 sweep at no. 4. On court three Elizabeth Johnson battled through a 6-3 set one win to finish 6-1, and both Jacqueline Benton and Logan King faced off in a tiebreaker set for their respective wins to close out the match in favor of the Angels.

Meredith travels to Greensboro tomorrow to face off with the Pride. Doubles play is slated to begin at Noon on the courts of Grimsley High School.
