FERRUM, Va. -- The Meredith College tennis Avenging Angels fought for Thursday afternoon's 7-2 victory at Ferrum to clinch the third seed in East Division standings for next week's USA South Conference Tournament.
On court one Jacqueline Benton and Elizabeth Johnson won a tiebreaker versus Morgan Scott and Alexandria Dixon to win 9-8, and Logan King and Alexandra Cheney finished off the Panthers 8-4 for the win at no. 3.
Heading into singles with a 2-1 lead, Meredith's Emily Wilkinson gave up just one point on court four, and Cheney downed Hailee Green 6-1, 6-0 for the win on six.
Benton and Johnson each won their singles pairing at no. 2 and 3. Gillian Emerson outlasted Scott 7-5 in her first set, but Scott responded with a 6-3 finish in the second to force a split. Emerson held on for a 10-7 set three tiebreaker for her second league win at the challenging number one spot.
The Avenging Angels are slated to host the USA South's William Peace Pacers Saturday in a Noon doubleheader, honoring senior Jacqueline Benton just prior to the first match. Check back for updates should the weekend's forecast interfere with the schedule.
