Tennis Claims First Win of 2019

Aly Henneberry

ROANOKE, Va. -- After time off during the college's spring recess, Meredith College resumed play Monday afternoon at Hollins University and claimed the season's first win. The Avenging Angels swept doubles heading toward an 8-1 victory.

Alexandra Cheney and Sarah Porter shut out their opponents on court three of doubles play, and both went on to win her singles matches. Cheney swept Alexis Morring on court four, and Porter gave up just three games in a win at no. 6.

Brittney Brown also finished off her opponent Elizabeth Eubank without dropping a game, and she and partner Logan King won 8-3 at no. 2 doubles. King downed Anna Holland 6-1, 6-0 on singles court five.

Aly Henneberry and Natalie Collins finished off Kateri Johnson and Morring at the top doubles spot, and Henneberry picked up her first career victory with a 6-1, 6-3 finish over Sarah Snoddy. Collins battled Johnson on court one. After a tiebreaker end to set one, the pair finished off the match with a tight 10-game proset due to the setting sun and increasingly colder temps.

Meredith opens the USA South schedule next beginning Wednesday, March 27, at Averett University, followed by William Peace on the 30th. The Avenging Angels finally return to their home court April 4 for the Greensboro Pride.
