BEREA, Ky. -- The Meredith College Avenging Angels placed sixth in the USA South Conference Women's Track & Field Championship held at Berea College in Berea, Kentucky, April 18-19. Demonica Stanley and Essence Thomas medaled for the Angels, and both earned All-Conference honors as a result. Rookie Mitxi Ortiz was named to the All-Sportsmanship Team.
Piedmont College led the nine-team field with 215 points, and the host Berea Mountaineers placed second with 152 total points. Meredith finished with a combined 33 points. The event marked the first USA South Conference Track & Field Championship since 1986.
Stanley claimed the championship medal in the javelin throw with a new all-time Meredith record distance of 31.03 meters. Thomas earned the third-place medal for her performance in the 400 meter dash, finishing the event with a season-best time of 1:01.09.
Leading the Meredith throwers in shot put, Trinity Packer set a new season record of 9.98 meters to finish sixth today. Stanley tossed for 9.81 meters, and Kimberly Schuh recorded her throw at 9.53 meters. Schuh placed fourth in the javelin with a distance of 28.17 meters. Stanley also competed in the triple and long jumps with a 5th- and 10th-place finish, respectively.
In each of Thomas' prelim races in the 100 and 200 meter sprints, she set a new season best time. Thomas placed fifth in the finals of each event.
Allie Bucknam led the Meredith field in fifth in the 800 meter race with a time of 2:31.21, and Mitxi Ortiz finished 17th. Madeline Allred set a personal record in 21st, and Meredith Wyatt's time of 2:54.83 marked her personal best in the event. Isabelle Pasley also PR'd with a time of 3:02.74.
Megan Evans posted a top-10 finish in the 10,000 meter race with a time of 47:03.97, and also ran the 1500 meter race for the Angels. Macy Brinson's finish of 20:02.91 in the 5,000 meter race was good for 5th, and Emma Travis placed 13th. Rachel Hill ran the 400 meter hurdles with Travis and finished fifth in the field with a time of 1:15.52.
The 4x400 meter relay team of Hill, Ortiz, Bucknam, and Thomas posted a new season record of 4:36.41 for a seventh-place finish in the meet, and the 4x100 meter team with Stanley, Thomas, Schuh, and Packer placed fifth.
