Rocky Mount, N.C. - The Meredith Avenging Angels (8-6, 3-1 USA South) volleyball team claimed a 3-1 win over USA South foe N.C. Wesleyan (2-11, 1-3 USA South) in tonight's league action. Tonight's win marks the first over the Bishops in two years.
The hosts made quick work of Meredith in the early action of set one taking an 8-2 lead.
Rall and Hayes connected once more to end the run. On the next play, Molly Markley landed a kill to launch a 4-0 Meredith run to pull the Avenging Angels to within five.
After the hosts scored on back-to-back-to-back kills, Markley ignited another series for MC. The 4-0 Meredith run inched the Angels closer to NCW, and forced the Bishops to whistle for a break in the action holding onto a four-point advantage.
Wesleyan picked up four quick points for a 22-15 lead.
But the hungry Avenging Angels refused to fall. A misstep from the Bishops followed by a Rall kill gave Meredith a pair of points en route to an 11-3 run as MC slipped past the Bishops 26-25.
N.C. Wesleyan and Meredith battled closely in the early plays of set two. With an even score at 7-7, the Bishops launched a pair of kills to ignite a 7-2 run to claim a six point advantage at 14-8.
The Bishops dropped two points on attack errors but maintained the lead through 18-12.
An error at the service line followed by an Aguinaldo ace pulled Meredith to within one at 18-17. But NCW kept the Avenging Angels at arms length the rest of the way to tie the match.
In the third frame Long opened up with a kill on an assist from Clarke Glendenning and added a second as Meredith took a 4-2 lead.
An unfortunate string of Meredith errors helped N.C. Wesleyan regain the lead at 6-4 and forced Head Coach Fiona Barkley to call a timeout.
The Avenging Angels regrouped to score four in-a-row for a 9-7 lead.
The battle continued as the teams tied on eight more occasions before MC finished off the Bishops 25-20.
The fourth and final set found the hosts in the lead at 14-12 when Long led her team on a 6-0 run capped off by an Agiunaldo kill. Wesleyan continued to fight for an advantage but would not catch Meredith the rest of the way.
Long led all with 26 digs, adding 17 kills and two blocks. Rall tallied 13 kills in 35 attempts and Markley notched a dozen with four blocks. Aguinaldo picked up four kills and three blocks. Meredith's setter duo of Hayes and Glendenning combined for 56 assists with Hayes adding eight kills and 13 digs.
Freshman Bishop Victoria Stewart led all with 20 kills, adding a dozen digs. Taylor Johnson tallied 12 kills and four blocks, and setter Kayla White posted a game-high 39 assists.
The Avenging Angels host a USA South play date Saturday, September 28, and begin with Greensboro at 10 a.m. Meredith caps off the league quad-match with Mary Baldwin at 4 p.m. Methodist travels an hour north to join the action.
