FAYETTEVILLE, N.C. - The Meredith College volleyball team dropped two matches in today's play date at Methodist. New league member Covenant College claimed the first win with a score of 3-1 (12-25, 25-22, 14-25, 20-25). And the South's undefeated Maryville finished off the Avenging Angels in three (19-25, 16-25, 15-25).
CC jumped out to a quick 12-3 start in the first set, and Meredith never recovered.
Down 1-0 the Avenging Angels came out swinging in the second. Senior middle Molly Markley landed a kill and Anna Hayes forced a Covenant turnover on the next ball to tie the set 2-2. The USA South's leading blocker Jasmine Aguinaldo and outside hitter Karlie Long combined for a stuff to give Meredith the first lead of the match.
The Avenging Angels maintained a three-point lead at 9-6, but Covenant edged closer. A trio of unforced Meredith errors tied the set at 10s. Six points later the Scots took their first lead at 14-13 since holding a 2-0 advantage early in the set.
A kill and a service ace from Hayes, and another Aguinaldo-Long stuff edged the Avenging Angels back in front 16-14.
The teams reset the score on five more occasions before Meredith scored three of the final four points to secure the win.
Set three opened with balanced scoring until the Scots put together four consecutive points to move ahead to 9-5.
Covenant maintained control and extended the advantage to eight at 18-10.
Meredith came out strong in the fourth set and pushed to a five-point lead at 9-4. The Scots put together a 5-1 run to pull within one.
On the next ball Hayes dished out an assist to Markley. The teams exchanged points during the next series, and Meredith maintained a three-point advantage at 16-13.
But four Avenging Angel errors helped Covenant to six consecutive points forcing Meredith to whistle for a timeout.
The break in action did not interrupt the Scots, and Covenant cruised ahead to a 23-17 lead.
Markley and Glendenning delivered a pair of winners, and the Scots chipped in an unforced error to help Meredith pull to within three. But Covenant landed a kill on the next ball on the way to match-point for the eventual win.
Undefeated in league play, the Maryville College Scots made quick work of the Avenging Angels. Maryville out hit Meredith .337 to .075 in the sweep.
Markley led the Avenging Angels with 17 kills on the day, adding six blocks from the middle. In the loss to Covenant, Long posted a double-double with 10 kills and 18 digs, adding six blocks versus Covenant. Hayes tallied a double-double in the loss with 20 assists and 10 digs, and Glendenning dished out 27 assists on the day.
The Avenging Angels travel cross-town to William Peace next Wednesday, October 30 for a 7 p.m. USA South pairing. A ticket is required for entry into the Hermann Student Center.
