Corey Posts Double-Double as Angels Sweep Brevard

Caroline Corey in action

BREVARD, N.C. -- Caroline Corey led the Meredith College volleyball Angels with 15 kills, 14 digs in a 3-0 (25-19, 25-19, 25-19) victory over the host Brevard Tornados.

Meredith opened the match with a pair of Corey kills and led 3-1 before the Tornados tied the set at fives. Brevard continued to attack until a Meredith timeout shifted the momentum back to the Angels.

Samantha Smith and Lauren Phillips produced service rallies that pushed Meredith to a 17-11 advantage, and the Avenging Angels held on for a six-point victory with direction from rookie setters Avery Bowman and Bailey Lucas.

The host put up a fight in the second frame holding a late lead at 19-18. But a series of Brevard front line errors led to a trio of kills from Corey, Bowman, and Haley Reeg to finish off the set for a 2-0 advantage.

Set three opened in favor of BC, but the teams battled close through an even score of 13-13. Elisabeth Smith landed a kill from Lucas, and Emily Skoglund served up an ace for back-to-back MCVB points. E. Smith dished out an assist to Cathy Delano for a third to give the Angels a 16-13 lead. The teams traded points until a pair of Meredith miscues pulled the Tornados to within one at 20-19.

But Corey put an end to the match on three consecutive service aces punctuated by a Reeg kill from the middle for the win.

Reeg and E. Smith finished with five kills apiece to go along with Bowman and Ally Copenhaver, and Delano added four. Defenders Skoglund and S. Smith combined for 17 digs, and Delano tallied eight as a middle. Bowman recorded 23 assists, and Lucas finished with 11, adding six digs.

Brevard's Sydney Fox notched 11 kills, and Marina Rodriguez finished with 13 digs.
