WINSTON-SALEM, N.C. -- The Meredith College volleyball Angels captured their 15th consecutive victory Tuesday night with a 3-0 (25-17, 25-22, 25-17) sweep at Salem. Three defenders in double-digits led MCVB to the win.
Meredith opened the match with five straight points, including four blasts from Caroline Corey, along with four assists and a kill from rookie setter Avery Bowman. Salem responded with a pair of blocks directed by Olivia Henderson to even the set at 8-8. The Angels remained commited to their game plan and finished off the frame scoring eight of the last nine points for a 1-0 lead.
Set two remained close until Lauren Phillips and Emily Skoglund served MCVB on a 7-1 run to spread the gap to six. Salem pulled to within one at 23-22 with help from a series of missteps along the front line, but Samantha Smith entered the game to land a kill to interrupt the momentum. She launched a difficult serve to the Spirits, and Corey drilled an unassisted kill to finish off the set for a 2-0 match lead.
Meredith maintained a steady pace throughout the third frame to finish off Salem for the win.
Corey and Cathy Delano led all with double-digit kills, and Delano added four service aces and a pair of blocks. Haley Reeg finished with six kills, three blocks, and Bowman dished out 36 assists to go along with six kills. Elisabeth Smith and Ally Copenhaver tallied six kills apiece, while S. Smith's one kill in just two attempts combined with 12 digs for a strong defensive effort for the Angels. Phillips led all with 15 digs as the libero, and Skoglund notched 11 in the win.
Meredith closes out the regular season at William Peace Thursday night. A ticket will be required for entry into the Hermann Center, and live action will be available HERE.
