Another 1-2 Weekend Preps Volleyball for USA South Schedule

Cathy Delano puts down a pass from Avery Bowman

ARLINGTON, Va. -- The Meredith College volleyball Angels posted another 1-2 finish in this weekend's non-conference tournament action at Marymount University. Caroline Corey picker up her third All-Tournament honor for her efforts over the two-day event.

Match 1 (Friday)
The Avenging Angels collected their only win of the weekend with a 3-0 sweep over the Emory & Henry Wasps Friday evening. After a tight 29-27 first set finish, MCVB went on to handle the Wasps 25-12 and 25-14 over the next two frames. The defense led by Lauren Phillips with 21 digs and Cathy Delano with four blocks shut down E & H, allowing just 19 kills on the day.

Corey led the Angels with 12 out of the team's 35 kills with 7 from Whitney Bolton and six apiece from Delano and Adair Melton. Lauren Grodi and Avery Bowman split the setter role for a combined 27 assists.

Match 2 (Saturday)
MCVB opened today's action with a 3-1 loss to Franklin & Marshall, who received 11 votes in the latest top-25 AVCA Coaches Poll. After a 25-14 set one loss, the Avenging Angels returned to the court to even the match with a 25-17 second frame win. The Diplomats earned a 25-18 win in the third and edged Meredith 25-23 to finish the match for the win.

Corey led again with 13 kills and Delano with six blocks, adding five kills, and Hailey Long stepped up with nine kills from the right side. Corey led the defense with 17 digs, Phillips notching 16, and Emily Skoglund battled for a dozen to help manage the back line. Grodi and Bowman directed the offense again, dishing out a combined 32 assists.

Match 3 (Saturday)
Saturday's pairing with the host Marymount Saints followed much the same pattern with a 3-1 loss (22-25, 25-19, 22-25, 11-25). The Avenging Angels offense outperformed Marymount during the first two sets and played even in the third set. But single-digit kills left Meredith with a loss at the end of the day.

Phillips posted her second 30-assist performance of the season, and Bailey Lucas tallied 10 with 12 assists. Corey's 16 kills led all, and Bowman led with 22 assists. Kenzie Moore posted five blocks, and Elisabeth Smith recorded four with seven kills.

MCVB travels to Salem, Va., next Friday evening to face off with the Roanoke College Maroons in the final non-conference match of the regular season. Mark your calendar for the September 25 home opener versus USA South rival Averett University.
