Cross Country's Tonon Leads Division III Women in Salisbury

SALISBURY, N.C. -- The Meredith College cross country team competed in the Fleet Feet Invitational hosted by Catawba College at Salisbury Community Park Saturday morning. The Avenging Angels finished in sixth place out of fifteen team in the women's field, including NCAA Division II, Division III, and NJCAA teams.

Leading the Avenging Angels again this week, freshman Julie Tonon finished the 5,000 kilometer course in 17th place with a time of 22:07.9. Tonon was the top Division III finisher of the competition. Emma Travis bounced back this week with a stellar performance finishing 31st overall in a time of 23:45.8, just off of her collegiate cross country personal best.

Teammates Mitxi Ortiz and Francie Overman both achieved collegiate personal records in the 5K running 24:32.8 and 26:01.1, respectively.

The Angels return to action Saturday, Sept. 21, competing in the N.C. Wesleyan Classic on the campus of fellow USA South member North Carolina Wesleyan College in Rocky Mount. The course offers a preview for the conference championship slated for November 2.
